Zuise Ceremony for Doin & Ranka

After Ranka had completed three months senmon sodo training at Toshoji, she met with Doin-san and they both went to Sojiji and Eiheiji to do Zuise. Hojo-san, Koichi-san, and Yodo-san came to support them. Congratulations!

Annual Fundraiser for the Driveway Rescue Plan

Wayne removed all the trees and the driveway is clear for  John Kasteel, a professional gardener who lives just down the street and who will undertake the project.
How it may look like in the spring. Besides blossoming dogwood trees and hedges and there will be lots of flowers, plants and evergreens.

Visit to Zen River Lima, Peru

Ryusho Sensei invited Tenkei Roshi to lead a Zazenkai at Zen River Lima group in Peru
And a conference at the P.U.C.P. University in Lima
Tenkei and Tammy joined Ryusho and Busshin on a short trip to visit Paracas National Park, a large nature reserve located along the desert coastline of the Pacific ocean.

Removing Old Leaning Tree

Wayne managed to cut down a old tree that was leaning heavily after strong winds.

Jukai Ceremony

Kina Kyozen 響 全 (Echo Complete) Mooi and Elisabeth Shokan 照観 (Illuminating Insight) Brügmann both received Jukai from Tenkei Roshi at the end of the October sesshin. Congratulations!

Broken Boiler Replaced

The hot water boiler that served the showers and sinks in the old wing finally gave up after many years of service. A new one will be installed over the next few days by the local heating company.

Welcome to New Chickens!

After several of our rescue chickens passed away suddenly, two new beauties have joined the ranks. They are local chickens that had a good start in life. In a few weeks more rescues will arrive and these two will no doubt help the new arrivals on the basics of how to be a good chicken!

Two Arrows Desert Zendo Opening

Tenkei Roshi and Tammy Sensei were invited to join Sensei’s Musho and Mugaku for the opening of their new zendo in Torrey, Utah, US. Genpo Roshi was there too, as were Roshi’s Genno and Genko. The opening was included in an article published in the Salt Lake Tribune

Tenkei Roshi was invited to participate in the opening ceremonies of the new Liuzu Temple in  Göttingen, Germany. Doin Sensei joined him for the festive occasion.

Fifty Year Celebration of Z.C.L.A

Tenkei Roshi with  Roshis Tenshin Fletcher, abbot of Zen Mountain Center, Egyoku, abbot of Z.C.L.A., and Senseis Mugaku & Musho, leaders of the Two Arrows Zen Center in S.L.C. They were there to celebrate the fiftieth year of ZCLA since Maezumi Roshi officially opened the Zen Center in 1967, and for the annual White Plum Meeting.
Rev. Junyu Kuroda gave a lively Teisho during the festivities.

Monastic inter-religious dialogue at St. Willibrords Abbey in Doetinchem

A Zen River delegation was invited to join an inter-religious dialogue with Christian monastics at St. Willibrords Abbey in Doetinchem. Tenkei Roshi was invited to be one of the speakers.
The abbot, Pater Vesseur, and Tenkei Roshi were happy to meet and share their mutual ground on spirituality and practice.

New Rescue Chickens

Six rescue hens became new residents at Zen River and will be cared for by Shorin. They’d spent their first year in the egg-laying industry before being saved by a Chicken Rescue Farm “Red een Legkip” where they’ve been recuperating for the last three months. It will take a while for their plumage to return and figure out how to roost, but their pecking skills for foraging are already impeccable!

Visit Rev. Senpo Oshiro from Beunos Aires

Rev Senpo is the director of la Asociación Soto Zen de Argentina Nanzenji in Buenos Aires, and Tenkei Roshi knows him from conferences in Thailand and Japan. They met again at the 50th anniversary celebrations of Soto Zen at La Gendronniere, which made Senpo-san decide to visit Zen River for a few days on his way to Lithuania. He joined the weekend sesshin and gave the next day an inspiring talk about his activities in South America.

50th Anniversary of Soto Zen in Europe

On the weekend of May 12, Tenkei Roshi and Myoho Sensei joined the 400+ people who came to celebrate fifty years of Soto Zen in Europe. The seminar included an broad overview of all the past Zen masters who came to Europe to share the Dharma and the present masters and abbots of the various Zen denominations stretching from Ireland to Italy! It was hosted by La Gendronnière. The sokans (bishops) from Europe, Hawaii, South America, and America attended the last day for the commemorative services.

May 5th Marks the 5th Year Zendo Opening

Five years ago Zen River officially opened the Zendo in the presence of  Rev. Master Cheng Xin and Rev. Master Ke Xiang, the abbots of Tiantong Temple and Qita Temple in Ningbo, and Rev. Junyu Kuroda.  A time to celebrate!

Tenkei & Myoho went to visit Gakudo and the Keiryu-ji sangha in the Spanish Pyrenees. The colorful trailer is their provisionary Zendo
The property is located on a large piece of land with breath-taking views, and includes several stone structures. The one of the left is Gakudo’s living quarters; the upstairs is in the process of being remodelled into a zendo.
